Aggravated armed robbery charge

A 19 year old has appeared in the Hobart Magistrate’s court charged with aggravated armed robbery.

The charge relates to an incident on 7 August 2013 where a 16 year old was assaulted and robbed.  It’s alleged the man held a device, which was capable of emitting an electric shock, to the youth’s throat and demanded money. He then fled with cash and the youth’s mobile telephone.

Detectives from Hobart CIB located the device, which resembled a mobile phone with two prongs protruding from one end, during a search of a property in South Hobart.

“The device does not resemble stun-guns used by police or military,” said Acting Inspector Joel.

“Anyone considering buying such a device is warned that they are deemed to be unlawful unless a person is authorised by law to carry them, and criminal charges might apply to anybody found in possession of one,” he said.

Anyone with information about stun gun-like devices unlawfully obtained should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
