Aggravated Burglary and Stealing of firearms

Police are investigating the theft of 14 registered firearms and a vehicle following the burglary of a residence in Newstead, Launceston yesterday.

The firearms and a gold-coloured 2007 Holden Calais sedan (registration A54JV) were taken from a house in Clementina St, between 12.30pm and 2.15pm yesterday.

The firearms were appropriately registered and stored in an approved container on the premises, although it appears that the firearms were accessed via the use of a key located on the premises.

A small quantity of jewellery and laptop computers were also stolen.

Investigating officer, Sergeant Michael Gillies, said:

“It appears that the offender or offenders arrived on foot and fled in the gold Calais.

“Anyone who saw any suspicious people in Clementina St yesterday afternoon or who knows anything about the burglary is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.

“Anyone who sees the stolen Calais should report it immediately.

“This is also a timely reminder for registered gun owners to not only store their guns correctly but to keep their gun safe keys on them or in a secure location.”

Anyone with information that could help police is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Launceston CIB on 6336 3911.
