Inspector Robert Gyselman

A long-serving police officer has been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Inspector Robert Gyselman has been awarded the Australian Police Medal in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Inspector Gyselman was sworn in as a Junior Constable on 25 May 1970 and he graduated as a Constable on 2 February 1973.

He was promoted to 1/C Constable 1st Grade in 1975, to Senior Constable in 1979, to 3rd Grade Sergeant in 1984, to Senior Sergeant in 1989, and to Inspector in 1999.

Inspector Gyselman has served in a variety of roles, including the Hobart Watch; Hobart Criminal Investigation Branch; Huonville Police Station; Bellerive Police Station; Officer-in-Charge, Kingston Police Station; Officer-in-Charge, Hobart Drug Bureau; and Officer-in-Charge, Policy & Standards.

Inspector Gyselman has extensive operational and administration experience and has been in charge of complex coronial investigations, task forces and major crime investigations.

Inspector Gyselman has undertaken numerous personal development and specialised training courses in relation to surveillance, technical support and covert policing concepts. He has maintained a dedicated commitment to investigative training over many years.

He received a Commissioners commendation in 1977 in relation to the apprehension of criminal offenders at Huonville and in 1996 he was highly commended for operational leadership and outstanding investigative and management skills relating to a serious criminal investigation.

Inspector Gyselman was awarded the national medal in 1986 and clasp in 1997. He was presented with the Commissioner’s Medal for diligent and ethical service in 1999.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Jack Johnston, congratulated Inspector Gyselman on his success.

“Inspector Gyselman has given outstanding and distinguished service.  His devotion to duty, diligence and leadership have been recognised throughout his career and this is evidenced by the senior rank he has attained,” Mr Johnston said.

“During a career spanning 38 years, Inspector Gyselman has made a significant contribution to policing in Tasmania and he is deemed to be a worthy recipient of the Australian Police Medal. 

“I commend him for his impressive work for Tasmania Police and the communities he has served.”
