Tasmania Police Academy
The Tasmanian Police Academy is located on Hobart’s Eastern Shore in Rokeby, 19km from the CBD. The Academy is set on 29 hectares and overlooks Frederick Henry Bay. The Academy was officially opened on March 6, 1976 by the Honourable W A Neilson MHA, Premier of Tasmania.
Before the new Academy was built, police officers were trained in an old building in Sackville Street, Hobart. With the introduction of the police cadet scheme in 1970, the Sackville Street facility closed and an old YMCA building in Argyle Street was refurbished to provide accommodation for cadets and offices for staff. Classrooms were provided in different locations including the upper floor of the Bellerive Police Station. Accommodation was also available for cadets at Woodlands Hostel in New Town. Adult recruit training was non residential.
In 2003 work began on upgrading the Academy. At a cost of $3.6million, renovations included new carpet, a computer laboratory, a new modern commercial kitchen, upgrading of the accommodation to provide all rooms with ensuite facilities and the creation of five new family rooms.
The current trainee system consists of a live-in course of approximately 32 weeks in duration. As well as training courses, the Academy is used for specialist training for police officers and state service personnel training. The Academy is an important community asset and is used by schools, community groups and other public sector organisations.
