Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

Critical Incident Stress Management provides a critical stress management services for all Department of Police and Emergency Management personnel, both permanent and volunteer.

CISM was established in 1988 to support the State’s emergency care providers, in the interest of staff health and well-being. Its purpose is to lessen the impact of “critical incidents”, minimise potential long-term effect and promote a healthy and supportive work environment. It provides a range of services to fulfil this purpose. They include:

  • Assessment;
  • Defusing;
  • Debriefing (group and individual); and
  • Follow-ups.

CISM services assist in:

  • Lessening the impact of a critical incident;
  • Facilitating recovery of personnel who are experiencing normal reactions to abnormal events; and
  • Preventing the development or persistence of unresolved problems.

All critical incident stress management services are strictly confidential and are managed by professional staff.
