Media Liaison
Interest in the activities of police is immense. When we turn on our televisions, we see countless dramas and movies with a police theme. And of course, television, newspaper and radio news contain daily or even hourly information on major police activities, crime or court appearances.
Criminal activity has a direct effect on how we are able to conduct our lives on a daily basis. The pursuit of criminal activity and the protection of life, property and the peace is the role of police.
In carrying out this role, police are often seeking information from the public or advising of charges being laid and offenders being brought before the court. And of course, Tasmanians have the right to know that police officers are working hard to ensure our State remains the safest in the nation. Media liaison, therefore, is an important part of policing.
Officers are trained in carrying out this role and a dedicated unit provides the support and back-up required. All officers are encouraged to have contact with the media within certain guidelines, and you will see all personnel from a Constable to the Commissioner appearing in the media.
In doing this, care has to be taken that statements made by police do not prejudice a person’s right to a fair trial. Stringent media guidelines are laid down and adhered to by the Department.
Of course, media liaison knows no particular hours and two officers are tasked with being on call 24 hours a day to assist police and advise the media – keeping Tasmanians up-to-date on the work of the Service.
