Community Policing Services
The Office of State Community Policing Services is located in Temple House, 55 Argyle Street Hobart. The premises were built around 1825 by brothers Judah and Joseph Solomon. The name "Temple House" originated prior to a place for Jewish worship being established in Hobart. The property was purchased by Tasmania Police in 1964 and has been used as a training facility and storage building. In 1993 it was restored and is now the home of State Community Policing Services and Staff Support Services.
State Community Policing Services is responsible for the co-ordination of community based policing programs throughout Tasmania. The programs facilitated are Crime Stoppers, Bush Watch, Neighbourhood Watch, Safety House, Crime Prevention, Officer Next Door Program, Victim Visitation Program and Multicultural Liaison. These programs are then administered within the geographical districts by dedicated, District Community Policing Officers.
All programs are supported by staff from the State Office in Hobart whose primary task is to liaise and provide guidance to the relevant State Committees. The State Office is also responsible for research and management of community based pilot programs.
Community Policing officers also attend schools, shows, regattas, AGFEST and expo's around the state. In addition to the provision of crime prevention advice, they also undertake security audits and are responsible for the Service's historic displays.
