Aboriginal Liaison

Tasmania Police has developed an Aboriginal Strategic Plan that has been developed in consultation with all relevant stakeholders. The Plan seeks to build on experiences in order to develop better relationships with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.

The Plan provides a framework by which Tasmania Police will focus on the development of relationships with the wider Aboriginal community and will ensure that, through consultation, all reasonable expectations can be met.

Police will assist in identifying ways in which support can be given to the Aboriginal community in enhancing recognition of the rights of Australian indigenous people. We will continue to be exposed to extensive cross-cultural training in order that we are aware of our obligations to people in custody and, in particular, our duty of care to those Aboriginal people who are considered to be at greatest risk.

As a Department we are committed to ensuring that Aborigines are appropriately represented in our recruiting and welfare requirements and have set in place a network of Aboriginal Liaison Officers in each Command.
