Sergeant Fiona Smith and Special Constable Scruff

Special Constable Scruff

Special Constable Scruff

A recently retired and well loved honorary member of Tasmania Police has passed away.

Special Constable Scruff passed away on Monday, 31 August 2009, aged 17, after a short but contented retirement.

Scruff had served 16 years as a police mascot before his retirement from official duties in January 2009.

Sergeant Fiona Smith adopted Scruff from the Burnie Dogs’ Home in 1993.  The then on-year-old had been neglected and was in poor condition.

Sergeant Smith made Scruff a pair of blue shorts, a police shirt and hat for his duties.  Scruff had a high profile in the community and worked hard on the North West Coast, carrying out Police mascot duties at schools, retirement homes and fairs as well as raising thousands of dollars for charity.

Scruff’s achievements include becoming a finalist in the Greatest Australian Dog of the Year competition, on national television in 1999.
