Crime Prevention & Community Safety Council

Background

The CP&CSC was officially launched in 1998 in response to the Tasmanian Criminal Justice Strategy 1996.

The Tasmanian Criminal Justice Strategy 1996 was released by the Tasmanian Government to reflect the directions set by an issues paper commissioned by the Parliamentary Committee on Public Safety and the Response to Crime in 1995.  The Tasmanian Criminal Justice Strategy 1996 stated that: 'as crime is a whole-of community problem an effective response should involve the community and the government’.

The Strategy recommended that the broader community work with Government to address local crime prevention issues and that the Government’s role was to provide direction and support for local initiatives.

The Tasmanian Government of the day proposed that a Council be formed as an integrated approach to crime prevention from a whole-of-government perspective, with a focus on developing partnerships between government and community-based organisations.
