Crime Prevention and Community Safety Council

Crime prevention is the whole community's responsibility, not just the police!
A Crime Prevention and Community Safety Council was established to create a safer and more secure Tasmania by developing partnerships between community and government to focus on crime prevention.
The work of the Council is closely aligned with Tasmania Together, particularly Goal 2 "Confident, friendly and safe communities".
The Crime Prevention and Community Safety Council consists of sixteen members representing government, business and the community.
The aim of the Council is to reduce levels of crime in Tasmania, and to assist people in Tasmanian communities to feel safe.
The Council’s strategic objectives are to:
- To develop collaborative partnerships between community and Government;
- To focus on the particular categories of crime which are of concern in Tasmania;
- To focus on building community awareness of community safety issues and strategies;
- To focus on the causes of crime i.e. social crime prevention programs; and
- To develop, implement and evaluate innovative pilot projects.
In accordance with these objectives, the Council has implemented a number of projects focusing on burglary, fear of crime, truancy and juvenile crime, motor vehicle theft, safety and security for older persons and business crime.
