Crime Stoppers Helping with Impressive Drug Results
Members of the public are being praised for helping Crime Stoppers contribute to the seizure of more than 1 million dollars worth of drugs by Tasmania Police in just four months.
Between January and April of this year, $1,036,210 worth of drugs has been seized with the help of Crime Stoppers.
The majority of the seizures have been marijuana.
Of this figure, $475,070 worth of drugs has been seized from the Northern District, $130,840 from the Southern District and $430,300 from the Western District.
Commander (Southern District), Michael Brazendale, said information to Crime Stoppers has resulted in $5.3 million dollars worth of drugs being seized in Tasmania since 1994.
“One million dollars recovered in the first four months of this year is clearly significant and there is no doubt that Crime Stoppers has contributed to this,” Commander Brazendale said.
“Tasmania Police is very supportive of Crime Stoppers and these results demonstrate why we value the important contribution that it makes to policing in our community.”
The Chairman of Crime Stoppers, Mr Brian Aherne, said since its inception in Tasmania in 1994, Crime Stoppers has received more than 31,500 calls leading to 2,715 arrests or summons and 13,800 charges.
“Callers, who are guaranteed anonymity, may be entitled to a reward of up to two-thousand dollars for information leading to the charging or arrest of offenders or if drugs or stolen goods are recovered,” Mr Aherne said.
To date, more than $151,000 in rewards has been paid and all recipients remain totally anonymous even when collecting the rewards.
Rewards, which can be up to $2000, have been given for information that has been provided and led to some seizures.
Please note: These figures relate only to drugs seized with the help of Crime Stoppers information – not the total amount of drugs seized.
