2008 Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge Winners Announced
The winners of the 2008 Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge were announced at a special ceremony held at the Tailrace Function Centre in Launceston.
This year’s Youth Challenge theme was, “Bullying and when does it become a police matter”. There were over 1000 students from schools around Tasmania competing in the 110 teams registered for this year’s competition.
Crime Stoppers Youth Challenge is a competition in which students conduct research, present their findings to the community, and create practical solutions to assist in preventing crime.
Students from public and private schools state-wide participated in the 7th Youth Challenge, which also aims to raise awareness and encourage the community to report information to Crime Stoppers.
The judging panel had the pleasure of reviewing a range of pieces of work of a very high standard. It was evident that a tremendous amount of work went into the submissions and that the students appeared to really enjoy researching this important issue.
The submissions included; stories, poetry, booklets, pamphlets, posters, reports, multi-media presentations, victim stories, newspaper articles, scripts for radio or television productions, talks, debates, performances and games. Many of the schools also attracted local media attention with their research and/or activities.
Miandetta Primary School, Sheffield District High and MacKillop College were winners of this year’s age categories with technology widely used by this year’s winning entrants, including high quality web pages, DVDs and advertisements.
Chairman of the Board of Crime Stoppers Tasmania, Mr Brian Aherne, commended all participants and their teachers on their efforts.
“The Challenge allows students to develop real-life skills, learn not just about crime and criminal processes, but also about interacting with the community and making a valuable contribution to solving crime,” Mr Aherne said.
