Tasmania Police AFL Grand Final Day state-wide traffic operation
Tasmania Police has reported continuing improvements in driver behaviour after a state-wide traffic operation on Saturday, 26 September 2009, after the AFL Grand Final.
Police warned they would be carrying out additional high profile traffic operations, and that people should make plans to get home if their football celebrations included drinking alcohol.
Police carried out more than 3,000 random breath tests on Saturday. One per cent of the tests detected drink drivers.
“The results from these comprehensive traffic operations show that most people take their driving responsibilities seriously,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner, Michael Brazendale.
“We are encouraged by these figures considering the resources that Tasmania Police put into this traffic enforcement operation. To find the vast majority doing the right thing on the Grand Final weekend is a positive outcome.”
“Unfortunately there were some exceptions, as 6 Excessive Drink Driving Notices, where drivers are automatically disqualified, were issued on Saturday,” said Mr Brazendale.
“It is worth noting that Tasmania has now had its longest period this year, just over 8 weeks, without a fatal crash.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. We need to ensure that this message continues to get through to road users.”
