Tasmania Police successfully resolve apparent hostage situation near Margate

Late on Sunday, 20 September 2009, Tasmania Police successfully resolved an incident near Margate.

At approximately 1:45pm a man contacted Police, threatening self harm and claiming he was holding two hostages with him at his home.

About 20 police officers, including police negotiators and members of the Special Operations Group were brought in, and just after 4:30pm the man was taken into custody.

The 32 year old man did not have any hostages with him and he was not armed.

The man was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for assessment and subsequent interview.

“This potentially dangerous situation was successfully resolved through the work of police negotiators.”

“The first aim of Police is to ensure that no one is harmed, and all the officers involved are to be congratulated,” said Acting Southern District Commander, Peter Powell.
