Businesses to Benefit from Police Information Booklets
The Minister for Police and Emergency Management, Jim Cox, launched three new booklets containing information designed to help keep Tasmania the safest state in the country.
Mr Cox said the booklets were developed by Tasmania Police to assist the community and businesses make informed decisions about their security and safety.
“They provide information on robbery procedure and response, policing requirements for closed-circuit television, and shoplifting.
“Tasmania Police is always striving to respond to community needs, and this includes providing practical information to the business sector so that businesses can help reduce the risk of becoming victims of crime.”
Mr Cox said the robbery booklet contained advice on how a business could reduce the likelihood of being robbed.
“It includes suggestions on the lay-out of the business and cash-handling procedures.
“It also advises on what to do during and after a robbery, and underlines the importance of being able to provide a good description of offenders to police.”
Mr Cox said the closed-circuit television booklet was aimed at businesses considering installing or updating a closed-circuit television system.
“Often businesses have CCTV systems that are not maintained and either do not function properly or produce poor quality footage.
“This can often hinder a police investigation and may be excluded as evidence by a court.
“This booklet outlines best-practice CCTV systems and what businesses need to consider to ensure they afford the best possible protection.”
Mr Cox said the shoplifting booklet aimed to remind businesses about the prevalence of shoplifting and what they can do to help stop their business being targeted.
“The production of these booklets is an excellent initiative of Tasmania Police and the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Council, and they will form an important crime prevention tool for the business community,” Mr Cox said.
