Older EPIRBs Will Stop Being Detected

On 1 February 2009 - 121.5Mhz personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) will stop being detected by satellites. Only 406Mhz beacons will be detected from that date.

Tasmania Police is advising bushwalkers and other EPIRB holders to be aware of the detection cut off date for the long serving 121.5Mhz EPIRBs.

New 406Mhz EPIRBs can be hired from Service Tasmania shops.

It is important that old EPIRBs are disposed of in a sensible manner, including removal of the batteries from the unit. EPIRBs may be disposed of through any Battery World store.

More information about EPIRBs can be found on Australian Maritime Safety Authority website.
