Explosives Amnesty

The Explosives Amnesty currently in place in Tasmania has resulted in a range of dangerous items being collected by Tasmania Police.

Explosives, including gelignite which has not been manufactured since the 1980s, detonators, fireworks, bullets and military ordnance have been collected by the Tasmania Police Bomb Response Group.

These items have been collected from around the state.  They pose a real danger to the community. The amnesty is the time to get rid of them safely and without fear of prosecution, with the help of Tasmania Police and Workplace Standards.

The Explosives Amnesty relates to:

    • blasting explosives - cartridges, detonators, detonating cords, boosters
    • propellant and black powders
    • safety cartridges - bullets
    • fireworks - ‘type 3’ large display fireworks
    • military ordnance.

The Explosives Amnesty ends on 29 March 2009.

Tasmania Police asks that anyone who has these items to contact Workplace Standards on the Hotline number 1300 366 322.

Police will collect them and dispose of them safely.

There are significant penalites which can be imposed under the new legislation commencing after the amnesty. These include fines up to $60,000 for indivduals.
