Look Who's Littering

The Litter Act 2007 introduces stronger and more flexible and enforceable anti-littering provisions.

Penalties apply for littering.

All police officers and officers specifically appointed under the Act as authorised officers are empowered to take action against offenders.

What is Litter?

Litter is any material that has been left where it is not meant to be. Frequently littered items include:

  • cigarette butts
  • drink containers
  • take-away food packaging
  • bus tickets
  • apple cores
  • material falling from an unsecured load
  • leaves swept into the gutter

Litter also includes: abandoned vehicles, furniture, household rubbish dumped on the roadside etc.
