Tasmania Police
Safer Community Partnership
Following approval by the Hobart City Council, Tasmania Police and Council officers will be working together to establish a community based safety partnership with the aim of making Hobart an even safer city.
The Safer Community Partnership will draw on representatives from the community, business, youth, schools, government and non-government agencies to participate in the development and implementation of short and long term strategies to enhance safety and amenity in Hobart.
The partnership will be action oriented and will draw on the combined resources of the stakeholders.
Some of the issues the partnership may examine are:
- infrastructure, such as lighting and security cameras;
- safety on public transport;
- alcohol and drug abuse;
- maximising policing in the City;
- crime prevention through environmental design;
- truancy and homelessness;
- safety in parks and gardens;
- traffic and pedestrian safety issues;
- legislative issues; and;
- liquor licensing issues, including the responsible service of alcohol.
While the Safer Community Partnership will have an important role in the future safety strategies for Hobart, it’s important to acknowledge the gains made in recent years.
“Over the past few years, the number of crimes, burglaries, assaults and anti-social behaviour in central Hobart has significantly decreased,” said Inspector Scott.
“And this financial year we are on track to record a fall of 21 per cent in business burglaries, and a 30 per cent fall in car burglaries.”
The community can also be reassured that assaults in public places are also projected to fall by almost 11 per cent this financial year, while property damage offences in central Hobart are also down by a projected 9.5 per cent.
The formation of the Safer Community Partnership will build on these gains, and allow the concerns of stakeholders such as retailers to be heard and acted upon.
