Yuli and Flicka Top Dogs for Drug Detection

Yuli and Flicka have a sense of smell 100,000 times better than humans and can detect the residual scent of a drug in an empty bag. Tasmania Police’s new drug dogs started work in May 2008, and conducted searches produced numerous drug detections.

Dog handlers’ unit head Senior Sgt Richardson said “Flicka and Yuli produce huge dividend in terms of the efficiency with which you can search all types of premises and open areas.”

“A dog might take 15 minutes to do a search of a particular area where officers could take hours.”

Specialist capability services head Inspector Glen Ball said the dogs and their handlers were achieving excellent results.

“We are very happy. The quality of the dogs and handlers is outstanding and the dogs are warmly welcomed from the community wherever they go.”
