Police Recruit Training - Tasmania Police and the University of Tasmania

Tasmania Police recruits will complete 15 units of the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) undergraduate degree during their 35 week recruit course, leaving 9 further units to be completed after graduation from the Police Academy to attain the degree. Due to the varied nature of policing, many aspects of police training are not suitable for academic credit, which has resulted in a two pronged curriculum being developed. The model allows for the 15 academic units to be delivered in conjunction with 5 practical units that are subject to competency based assessment.

Police recruits will greatly benefit from undertaking the degree through this in-service pathway, as the units completed during recruit training do not attract HECS fees.

Upon graduation, a constable will be provided the opportunity to complete the outstanding 9 units to obtain the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies). This study will require financial input from the member, but the existing support from Tasmania Police through the Tertiary Education Assistance Scheme (TEAS) will apply. Upon completion of the undergraduate degree, the opportunity will be provided to pursue post graduate qualifications.
