Physical requirements are outlined here. The elements of the physical testing should be discussed with a physical trainer if an applicant is unsure what is required.
When do I need to obtain my Police Rescue Award and First Aid certificates?
Recruitment Services will advise applicants at which stage the Police Rescue Award and First Aid Certificates should be obtained. Generally an applicant will be asked to gain these qualifications after the application has been progressed from interview.
Do I have to live at the Tasmania Police Academy if I am appointed as a Trainee Constable?
No. There is no longer a requirement for Trainees to reside at the Tasmania Police Academy.
What training do Trainee Constables undertake?
Applicants should be aware of the high academic workload that will be required of a Trainee Constable. The trainee course includes 15 out of 24 units towards a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Police Studies) degree. This is a large component of a degree contained within a 34 week course, therefore a significant amount of ‘out of hours’ study will be required to complete the training. Trainees are also required to undertake driver training, operational skills training and other elements essential to modern policing.
Will I be given feedback if my application is not progressed?
No. Due to the large number of applications received by Tasmania Police, individual feedback will not be given.
Does Tasmania Police have any programs for school students who are interested in a career in policing?
Tasmania Police conduct two school-based programs for senior secondary students interested in pursuing policing as a career:
- Year 11 students can apply to participate in the Junior Constables Police College Program
- Year 12 students can apply to participate in the Career Development Program.
Details of both programs are available here. Careers advisors and pathway planners at senior secondary schools will have details of these programs.
