School-based Programs
Tasmania Police conducts the Junior Constable Police College Program and Career Development Program aimed at senior secondary students interested in pursuing policing as a career.
No new Junior Constable and Career Development Programs will be held in the 2011-2012 financial year.
Junior Constable Police College Program
The Junior Constable Police College Program (JCPCP) provides an opportunity for Tasmanian college students to safely experience the roles and responsibilities of a police officer through a diverse range of policing activities. To be eligible for the program, students must apply when they are in Year 11, and if successful, will commence the program in Year 12 whilst studying to obtain their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE).
The aim of the JCPCP is to support, encourage and prepare students for a career in policing, placing them in uniform and exposing them to a variety of operational roles within Tasmania Police. Junior Constables wear a police uniform whilst undertaking duties in supervised and controlled low-risk environments. The uniform differs slightly from operational police uniforms so that operational members can immediately recognise the member as a Junior Constable.
Junior Constables work part-time within Tasmania Police and are required to perform 368 hours of duty per year. This is comprised of 16 hours per fortnight during school terms in a variety of policing areas, plus two one-week instructional sessions at the Tasmania Police Academy during school holiday periods in February and December.
The existence of the JCPCP personnel is not designed to displace operational or administrative police. They are not used as an operational police resource and are present primarily to observe and experience the operational and administrative roles that police perform.
Tasmania Police is committed to ensuring students who embark on this program receive support to complete their college education and obtain their TCE, with pre-tertiary English and Legal Studies preferred subjects. The casual employment offered is designed to fit around the studies of each individual, and under no circumstances shall a student be expected to forego a scheduled class in order to perform their rostered duties with Tasmania Police. Flexibility shall be offered on an individual basis to ensure causal employment does not interfere with scheduled class timetables.
Tasmania Police hosts a number of information sessions across the State for students, parents, pathway planners and career development officers.

Career Development Program
Tasmania Police continues to run the highly successful Career Development Program.
The Career Development program is aimed at Year 12 and university students who are considering policing as a career. Participants will be provided with a snapshot of policing over a two-day program at the Tasmania Police Academy and will be exposed to general duties, marine and other specialist policing areas. Students from outside the Hobart area will be offered accommodation at the Tasmania Police Academy for the night. Students will be engaged in activities associated with modern policing, providing them with an insight into the selection process and training environment for Tasmania Police trainees.
Students interested in this program are encouraged to contact their pathway planners or career advisor who have details of the Career Development Program and nomination process.
Participants interested in participating in the next Career Development Program must remain in contact with their career advisor and or pathway planner. Dates for the program are yet to be confirmed. As soon as this can be done they will be posted on the website and schools will be advised.
The program will:
- Provide assistance to students in application preparation
- Engage students in activities associated with modern policing
- Allow nominated participants to sit the entrance exam
- Give participants an insight into the selection process for Tasmania Police recruits.
