Higher Education

Tasmania Police provides assistance to members and employees to enable them to undertake tertiary education. The preferred course of study is the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies). However, applicants currently undertaking a course of study at a tertiary institution, recognised by Tasmania Police as approved courses of study, may receive assistance upon appointment. Assistance provided consists of the following:

  • An interest-free loan for the payment of the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) fee or full fee paying course fees.
  • A 50% subsidy for text books where members or employees obtain a pass in the unit or units studied.
  • Study leave to a maximum of five days per annum, or one study day per unit but subject to the service needs of Tasmania Police. Members and employees are required to undertake study in their own time over and above the assistance provided by Tasmania Police.
  • In some cases academic awards and scholarships are also available to those members and employees who meet certain requirements.

Hours

All police officers are required to work shift work and depending on their location, they work a variety of shifts. Police officers work an average of 38 hours per week.

Salary and Allowances

Salary rates alter from time to time depending on years of experience and workplace competencies attained. Shift work allowance is paid depending on the type of roster in respective work areas. Overtime may be applicable where time worked is in excess of normal working hours. Additional allowances are available for meals, accommodation and plain clothes requirements in certain circumstances.

Recreational and Other Leave

Tasmania Police provides generous leave provisions including 6 weeks Recreational Leave per year. Other leave, such as Long Service, Sick, Carers, Parental, Paternity, Maternity, Bereavement or Adoption Leave are available.

Successful applicants from other State and Commonwealth agencies, including the armed services, may be able to transfer their entitlements. There are conditions which include time limits on transfer. It is important that applicants enquire about any transfer of leave entitlements with current employers prior to separation.

Superannuation

Employer contributions for superannuation will be made to any complying superannuation scheme. All police officers may elect to make fortnightly contributions to their preferred superannuation fund. This can occur through salary sacrifice.

Transfers

All members of Tasmania Police are subject to state-wide transfer depending upon the needs of the service. Members may apply for transfers during their career. In some specialist positions, maximum tenures may apply. Upon graduation constables are likely to be posted to Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, or Burnie police stations for a minimum period of two years.

Australia Defence Force Reservists

Tasmania Police supports Reservists in carrying out their Defence Service. Tasmania Police does not compel Reservists to use their annual or long service leave for periods of Defence Service and supports Reservists when returning to work after such service.
