To be considered for appointment with Tasmania Police, an applicant must meet the following essential requirements:

(A) Police Appointment Examination

(B) Medical Examination

Applicants who are invited to an Assessment Centre Day will be required to undertake a preliminary medical examination. This is to ensure that the applicant is physically fit to undertake all Assessment Centre Day activities. Applicants progressing post-Assessment Centre Day will be required to undertake a pre appointment medical examination, including hearing and eyesight tests. Recruiting Services will provide the necessary medical documentation when required. Please be advised, that applicants are responsible for payment of all medical examinations.

The minimum eyesight requirements are:

  • binocular visual acuity 6/6 and no less than 6/12 in the worst eye
  • if visual aids are required to meet this standard, then the applicant must possess one pair of contact lenses and one pair of spectacles, which allow him/her to meet the acuity standard, and
  • normal colour vision.

A more detailed description is available from Recruiting Services.

(C) Physical Fitness Assessment

As part of the Assessment Centre Day, applicants will be required to undergo a physical fitness assessment and should note that previous applicants have found the Chin-ups and Progressive Shuttle Run to be the most difficult components of the assessment. Further advice is available from Recruiting Services. The following outlines the minimum standards:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
    • Minimum for all ages and genders, must be between 20-29.9.

      Age 30-39 Females x1, Males x7
      Age 40-40+ Females x1, Males x6
    • Handgrip Test (handgrip dynamometer test – measures grip strength of dominant and non dominant hand strength)
      Females: 39yrs and under x25kg, 40yrs and over x24kg
      Males: all ages x45kg
    • 5 Stage Sit-up Test
Males and females must achieve 3 of 5 sit-ups to pass.  Each stage consists of one sit up with arms in varying positions.  The test requires a participant to do one sit up at stage and feet must remain on the ground for all stages.
    • Partial Curl Ups (Abdominal Crunch)
      Repetitions in 60 seconds
      Females: under 30yrs x16, 31-39yrs x10, 40yrs and over x7

In this test applicants run 20 metres, prop, turn and run again when a ‘beep’ sounds. The time between the ‘beep’ decreases every minute. This means an applicant will run slowly at the beginning and have to increase running speed to keep up with the ‘beep’. The test is finished when the applicant can no longer keep up the pace dictated.
    Performance standard to be obtained:
Females: all ages - level 6.2
    Males: under 30yrs - level 8.8, 31-39yrs - level 8.4, 40yrs and over - level 7.8

(D) Good Character

It is a policy of Tasmania Police that applicants demonstrate they are of good character and therefore unlikely to compromise the role or public expectations of police officers. Police officers are required to subscribe to a Code of Ethics. They must carry out their duties justly without fear, favour or affection, malice or ill-will, and act honestly and with the utmost integrity.

Consequently, an application is likely to be unsuccessful if the applicant:

  • has an unacceptable number of prior convictions
  • has ever been sentenced to a term of imprisonment
  • as an adult, has been convicted or found guilty of a serious offence
  • has outstanding warrants or is awaiting criminal charges, or
  • has been declared bankrupt and has not yet been discharged.

Other factors that may adversely affect chances of selection include:

  • any patterns of behaviour or attitudes that indicate latent or overt aggression
  • a history of repeated breaches of any statutes, regulations or other written law
  • socially unacceptable behaviour such as the abuse of legally prescribed drugs or alcohol, or
  • doubt of an applicant’s capability to behave in an ethical manner and to uphold the law in an appropriate discretionary and fair manner.

Prospective applicants are urged to enquire with Recruiting Services if they consider that character requirements may preclude them from appointment.
