Tasmania Police
Officer Admitted to Dean’s Roll of Excellence
A member of Tasmania Police has distinguished himself academically by being admitted to the Dean’s Roll of Excellence for the Faculty of Arts.
For Senior Constable Daniel Newbury, this represents a significant achievement in his personal and professional life. The Roll of Excellence requires students to have maintained an average distinction grade or better. Only a small number of students achieve this standard and their performance is a testament to their abilities and the capacities of members of Tasmania Police.
As a recipient of the Dean’s Roll of Excellence he is entitled to membership of the Golden Key International Honour Society and the privileges that entails.
Senior Constable Daniel J Newbury
Daniel joined Tasmania Police on 14 October 1996 as a member of Course 3/1996. Upon graduating he was posted to Hobart Police Station and became a member of the Hobart Bicycle Squad. He has since served at Bellerive Police Station, Eastern Crime Management Unit, Hobart Criminal Investigation Branch and Southern Crime Management Unit.
Daniel commenced study, not only to enhance his skills and knowledge but to also achieve personal satisfaction and development. He appreciates that partnering a tertiary education with training obtained in-house, denotes the recognition of policing as a profession.
Daniel was awarded Department of Police and Emergency Management Scholarships in 2007 and 2008. He commenced the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) in 2000 and expects to complete it in 2008 (this includes a lengthy deferral of studies for international travel).
Whilst undertaking university study, Daniel also completed pre-selection and achieved Senior Constable rank. He has completed the CIB course and was designated a Detective in 2004.
Daniel admits that combining part-time study, full-time work and raising a young family has been one of the most challenging things he has done. He maintains that keeping a positive and determined approach to work and study is an underlying factor in his achievements. The support and understanding of his family is another key element, assuring that, with planning, various obligations could be juggled and achieved.
The Commissioner, Mr Jack Johnston, is very pleased to see employees of the Department gaining such prestigious awards.
“These awards are very well deserved, and the Department is happy to be able to provide encouragement, assistance and support to members to enable them to undertake tertiary education.
“Constable Newbury’s achievements exemplify this organisation’s progression towards Policing being regarded as a true profession.”
