Advice in relation to criminal assault charges

Tasmania Police has received advice from the office of the DPP in relation to an investigation into an incident outside the Syrup night club on 19 July 2014.

The incident involved an altercation between a 28 year old man from Mornington and a 33 year old man from Howrah who was employed by the night club.

During the altercation, the 28 year old man fell to the ground, hitting his head. He sustained serious head injuries and he remains in hospital.

As a result of the circumstances surrounding the incident and the actions of both men in the altercation, the DPP has advised against laying charges.

“The family of the 28 year old man have been advised of the outcome of the investigation,” said Detective Sergeant Phil Curtis.

“It is a tragic set of circumstances when a night out results in a potential lifelong injury and I expressed sympathy to the family on behalf of Tasmania Police,” he said.

“Police have appealed to people planning a night out over the Christmas / New Year period to take care of themselves and their mates,” said Det. Sgt Curtis.
