Ambulance damaged in hit and run collision Bass Highway near Somerset

Tasmania Police are seeking assistance regarding a crash involving an ambulance from Ambulance Tasmania and another vehicle.

At approximately 12.50am on Tuesday 24 July 2018, the ambulance was travelling east on the Bass Highway approaching Somerset near Cloverlea Nursery, when a vehicle travelling west crossed the road directly into the path of the oncoming ambulance. Despite immediate evasive action by the ambulance, the vehicle collided with the ambulance causing extensive damage to the ambulance.  The vehicle responsible for the collision stopped briefly before driving off from the scene in a westerly direction along the Bass Highway.

At the time of the collision, the ambulance did not have any patient/s and the crew of two paramedics were uninjured.   The offending vehicle is believed to be a Volkswagen utility of SUV or similar type vehicle.

Tasmania Police are appealing to members of the public who have any information about this incident, or may have seen a damaged Volkswagen or similar vehicle travelling west along the Bass Highway near Somerset at or around 12:50am.
