Counterfeit Money Investigation

Police continue to investigate reports of counterfeit $50.00 notes circulating in the North and North-West of the State.

Detective Acting Sergeant Felicity BOYD of Devonport CIB confirms that the notes appear legitimate but that upon closer inspection, are fake.

“All of the reports we are investigating specifically relate to $50.00 notes with serial number DF 1380 1449.  We are finding that the texture of the notes is like paper and that the clear windows do not have the security features like genuine Australian currency,” Detective BOYD stated.

She said that all offences relating to counterfeit money fall under Commonwealth law and if convicted, bear heavy fines and periods of imprisonment.

Pursuant to the Crimes (Currency) Act 1981, persons convicted of making counterfeit money face a period of imprisonment of up to 14 years.  For persons convicted of uttering counterfeit money and possessing counterfeit money, they face up to 12 years and 10 years imprisonment respectfully.

Anyone with information as to the source of the counterfeit notes is encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
