Crash involving police vehicle on New Town Road

At 3:10pm a police vehicle was travelling north on New Town Road with lights and sirens activated enroute to a disturbance when a red Kia hatch pulled out from a parked position on the side of the road in an apparent attempt to undertake a u-turn. The police vehicle collided with the Kia hatch.

As a result of the crash the occupants of the Kia were trapped inside the vehicle for approximately 2 hours before being extricated by Tasmania Fire Service Road Crash Rescue officers.  They were treated at the scene by Tasmania Ambulance Service before being conveyed to hospital, where they were admitted overnight and have been reported to be in a serious but stable condition.

The driver and sole occupant of the police vehicle was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital for precautionary examination and released shortly afterwards.

Investigations into the cause of the crash will continue, meanwhile police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed it to contact the investigating officer Acting Sergeant Nic BARNES at Hobart.
