Email scam from a ‘known’ source

The Serious Organised Crime Division advises that there’s another type of scam doing the rounds – which is targeted towards both businesses and individuals.

For businesses, it’s presented as an email to a financial officer at a company and appears to have come from the boss.  It asks for the financial officer to prepare and make a payment for some business aspect and provides a BSB and account number.  The financial officer appears to be identified from the company website.

For individuals, it appears as an email from a friend and states they have some issue and asks for money to be lent and provides a BSB and account number for the deposit.

In both situations, the person emailing will engage with the email process.

It is advised that businesses should be aware of this scam and put in place processes to ensure the veracity of such requests.

Any request for money by friend should be checked with a phone call to them before sending it.

Anyone with concerns should contact the Fraud and e-Crime Unit at Fraud@police.tas.gov.au or by phoning 61732781.
