King Island firearms amnesty: 2 October

Tasmania Police will be holding a firearms amnesty at Currie Police Station on 2 October, 2015.

Anyone with unwanted, unregistered or illegal firearms can bring them to Currie Police Station between 9am and 4pm and there will be no penalty for illegal possession.

The firearms will be accepted by police without question and destroyed.

Sergeant Steve Shaw said:

“Firearms are an important part of island life but there is no place for illegal firearms.

“Amnesty days have proven very successful in regional areas of Tasmania recently.

“Often people don’t set out to have an unregistered firearm, it can happen due to circumstances they had limited control over.

“Some people have inherited illegal firearms and others may have stored them for many years not knowing how to dispose of them,” he said.
