Learner driver charged with speeding, drink driving – Operation Safe Speeds

A learner driver has been charged with speeding and drink driving after they were caught as part of Operation Safe Speeds enforcement activities yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Ian Mathewson said that the driver was detected travelling at 107kmh in a 90kmh zone on the Bass Highway at Don near Devonport yesterday afternoon.

“The learner driver was then subjected to a breath test, which returned a positive reading of 0.07.

“The learner driver has been charged with exceeding 0.05, speeding, and being first year driver with alcohol in the body.”

Senior Sergeant Mathewson said that the accompanying instructing passenger was also subjected to a breath test, which returned a positive reading.

“An ultimate breath analysis reading returned a result of 0.156, which is high range drink driving.

“There are obvious significant concerns with the driver’s behaviour and the apparent attitude displayed by the accompanying licenced driver.

“There would appear to be little regard for their own safety as well as the safety of other road users and can simply be described as irresponsible and reckless.”

Tasmania yesterday took part in a national day of action targeting speeding – one of the major contributing factors in serious injury crashes and the number of lives lost on our roads.

Operation Safe Speeds is a 24 hour nationwide operation which aims to increase community awareness around the impact of speed on our roads.

As part of the operation, police conducted speed enforcement operations at various locations around the state.
