Man charged after high range drink driving offence

Police have charged a 38 year old Burnie man with drink driving offences after he recorded a reading of 0.323 – six times over the legal limit for driving a motor vehicle.

Police attended a minor single vehicle crash on West Park Grove, Burnie about 9.30am.

As a result of the crash, police have charged the man, who was the holder of a Provisional drivers licence.

The man was issued with an excessive drink driving notice, disqualifying him from driving. The driver was bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Sergeant Craig Harvey of Western Road and Public Order Services said the incident highlighted the fact that drink driving offences can occur at any time of the day or night.

“This is a particularly high reading and the driver’s actions have put himself and other road users at significant risk,” Sgt Harvey said.

“Drink driving is one of the ‘fatal five’ driving behaviours that contribute to serious and fatal crashes on Tasmanian roads. Members of the public can expect Tasmania Police to be targeting drink driving offenders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
