Motorists urged to plan ahead for Run the Bridge event

Tasmanian motorists have been urged to plan ahead ready for the Run the Bridge event being held in Hobart on Sunday.

Road closures and local detours will be in place on both sides of the Derwent River, and motorists should expect travel delays while the Tasman Bridge is temporarily closed for the event between 7am-9am in the interest of public safety.

Alternative routes for crossing the Derwent River are available via the Bowen and Bridgewater Bridges, however motorists should allow at least an extra 30 minutes for their travel via these detours.

Motorists are advised:

  • Kangaroo Bay Drive and Pembroke Place, Bellerive will have no entry or exit between 7.30-8.30am;
  • Traffic wishing to use Rosny Hill Road to the Tasman Bridge will be diverted via Cambridge Road to Gordons Hill Road and will need to travel via the East Derwent Highway to the Bowen Bridge for access to Hobart and the western shore;
  • No vehicles will be permitted access to the Tasman Bridge from Hobart or Rosny side. Alternative routes are available for heavy vehicles, via the Brooker Highway, East Derwent Highway and Bowen Bridge.
  • Residents on the event route wishing to enter or exit during the event should park their vehicles off the route.

Acting Inspector Justin Lawson said that motorists were advised to plan their trip ahead so that any delays were minimised.

“We understand that event organisers have been working with the Department of State Growth, the Hobart Airport, all airlines, taxi companies, Metro and affected businesses on arrangements for the event. We’re committed to making the event a safe and successful one with minimal disruption to motorists as possible,” he said.

“We understand that closing roads – even for a short period of time – can be disruptive, so we’re asking motorists to plan ahead to make sure that any delays are minimised.

“We’re encouraging people to check out any road closures in advance – and plan their trip accordingly.”

Acting Inspector Lawson said that there will be a strong and visible police presence to ensure safety and security of all participants and spectators.
