Murder charge for elderly Hobart woman’s death

A 61-year-old man from New South Wales has been charged with murder in relation to the death of his mother in Hobart in March.

The arrest is the result of an investigation by Hobart CIB detectives into the death of an 88-year-old woman at her Sandy Bay home on 4 March 2016.

It will be alleged the elderly woman died after the administration of medication.

It will also be alleged that the man, formerly of Hobart, travelled to Hobart in the days before her death.

As part of the investigation, three Tasmania Police officers travelled to Woy Woy on the NSW Central Coast on Wednesday and conducted searches at several properties. NSW officers assisted in the searches.

They arrested the 61-year-old man at his workplace today.

He appeared at Woy Woy Court this afternoon and an extradition order was granted. He is due to appear at a special sitting of Hobart Magistrates Court on Sunday.
