National Police Remembrance Day – 29 September 2014

Tasmania Police will today remember colleagues who have lost their lives while serving and protecting their communities at a ceremony for National Police Remembrance Day.

The ceremony will be held at the Tasmania Police Academy at Rokeby at 11am on Monday September 29.

Since 1817, 30 Tasmanian police officers have died while on duty or died as a result of their injuries. The last recorded death in Tasmania was 1999.

Commissioner Darren Hine said:

“For us, this is also a time to remember our colleagues who lost their lives through illness or other circumstances and our thoughts are with their families and loved ones.”

Mr Hine also praised the dedication of current serving members.

“Today is a reminder of the dangers that police officers sometimes face when they put their uniform on and go about their duties.

“I would like to thank those officers based all around the State for their hard work and ongoing dedication to serving their communities, particularly when faced with difficult or dangerous situations.”

National Police Remembrance Day is marked by the wearing of the traditional blue and white chequerboard ribbon, officially recognised as the symbol of Remembrance Day.
