SES Advice – Stay safe when clearing up this weekend

The State Emergency Service is reminding people to be aware of their own safety when clearing up following the week’s storm, flood and wind damage.

SES spokesman George Cretu said:

“Trees and branches may have been weakened by the weather and just a small disturbance could make them fall.

“If they’ve fallen against a building then they should be removed by experienced people.

“Building debris can also be a risk.

“Be aware of broken glass, sharp metal and torn roofing and take steps to minimise the risk, especially by wearing protective equipment.

“Climbing on roof areas to make repairs can be very slippery.

“Any damaged asbestos must be dealt with by a professional,” he said.

Insurance companies will often be able to provide services where the clean-up is associated with a building policy claim.

Anyone who needs assistance from SES volunteers due to a storm or flood emergency should call 132 500.
