Snow bound? Be Prepared

Tasmania Police has reminded people planning to head to the mountains this weekend that it will be snow fun if they are not prepared.

“Please ensure that your vehicle is well equipped for snow conditions; that you have warm clothes on board and a fully charged mobile phone.

“Remember there are still roads which require a 4WD for access,” said Sergeant Karl Krelle.

You will need to carry chains for driving in Mt Field and Ben Lomond ski areas.

Police remind people to:

  • Obey all road signs
  • Drive to the conditions
  • Be patient – there’s likely to be a lot of snow-bound traffic
  • Leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front
  • Drive with your lights on when visibility is poor
  • Tyres, wipers, headlights and demisters should all be in good condition.
  • Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and the tyres are in good condition and are correctly inflated.

It is also a good idea to carry an Emergency Kit.  Suggestions of what to include are:

  • Ice scraper and de-icer
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Warm clothes and a blanket
  • A pair of boots
  • First-aid kit
  • Battery jump leads
  • A shovel for snow
  • Food and a warm drink in a flask

“We want everyone to enjoy the fantastic skiing conditions and not have their plans ruined by inadequate preparation or lack of attention on the roads,” said Sergeant Nick Clark.
