Tasmania joins national day of action targeting speeding

Tasmania is today taking part in a national day of action targeting speeding – one of the major contributing factors in serious injury crashes and the number of lives lost on our roads.

Police will be out in numbers today as part of Operation Safe Speeds, which is being held across the nation today to enforce and encourage safe driving behaviour.

Operation Safe Speeds is a 24 hour nationwide operation which aims to increase community awareness around the impact of speed on our roads.

Senior Sergeant Ian Mathewson said that as part of the operation, police will be conducting speed enforcement operations at various locations around the state.

“Research shows that even small reductions in speed can result in a significant decrease in road trauma,” Senior Sergeant Mathewson said.

“Our message is to slow down– relax, enjoy the journey and take your time. There is never a legitimate excuse to speed.

“The reason we’re doing this is because your mother, your brother, your sister, your child are on the roads too, and our objective is to make our roads safer for all of them.”
