Tasmania Police statement – Stephen Roy Standage verdict

I would like to acknowledge and thank the original investigation teams, the members of the Cold Case Unit and prosecutors and staff at the Office of the DPP for their efforts in bringing some closure to the families of Ronald Jarvis and John Thorn.

The investigation of the murders of Ronald Jarvis and John Thorn was a complex operation involving original investigating teams and support personnel, and later detectives attached to the Cold Case Unit, supported by specialist and other support personnel including uniform police, forensics officers, undercover operatives, and a multitude of other specialist units within Tasmania Police.

Advances in forensic science including enhanced DNA analysis, electronic technology, covert policing techniques; the assistance of undercover operatives from Victoria Police, and the willingness of witnesses to continue to talk to police years after the murders, all contributed to the success of this investigation.

The dedication and commitment of all police officers, specifically those attached to the Cold Case Unit, specialists, and the staff and prosecutors of the Office of the DPP, under the leadership of the Acting Director Mr Daryl Coates SC over the years to bring this case before the Court is to be commended.

On behalf of Tasmania Police I extend condolences to the families of Mr Jarvis and Mr Thorn and hope the verdict of the court brings them some comfort.
