Update – Firearms incident

A 48 year old man has died as a result of his injuries after a firearms incident involving police in Cooee last night.
Police were called to the property at Stitz Street, Cooee, about 7.30pm in response to a call about an armed man.
Seven police officers were involved in the initial police response. Initial investigations indicate the man ignored repeated warnings to disarm, and confronted one officer, who discharged his firearm.
The man received abdomen and leg wounds and was taken to North West Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Sadly the man died at 3.50am, and our thoughts are with his loved ones.
The investigation is being undertaken by Professional Standards and assisted by Western District CIB and Uniform resources. Forensic and Ballistics personnel are also attending the scene.
The investigation will now include preparation of a report for the Coroner.
It is also a difficult time for the police officers involved and we are ensuring they are being provided with staff support services.
