New Unexplained Wealth Laws

Tasmania’s new unexplained wealth laws are a crucial tool in the fight against serious organised crime in this state.

These laws have the potential to dismantle and disrupt serious organised crime and force the forfeiture of millions of dollars in assets from criminals.

The officers assigned to the Serious Organised Crime Capability, together with the DPP, are focussed on an investigation under the new unexplained wealth provisions.

With these new laws, investigators can target the assets of criminals without the need to prove that wealth was derived from criminal activity.

If a criminal can’t prove they acquired their house, new car or big bank account legitimately – an application can be made for the forfeiture of the assets.
