Easter Road Safety 2014

Drive safely and have a happy Easter

Operation Crossroads, the national road safety operation over the Easter period, is underway from 00:01 Thursday 17 April – 23:59 Monday 21 April 2014.

Everyone has the right to travel on the road safely and Operation Crossroads is about maximising police resources to target unsafe driving on our highways and arterial roads.

“We want everyone to have a safe Easter on our roads” said the Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine.

“There have been four fatalities on Tasmanian roads in the past three weeks. These are tragic events for family and friends.  No one wants a tragedy like that to impact on their family,” said Mr Hine.

We all know how to stay safe on our roads. Don’t make the wrong choices. Remember the Fatal Five:

  • speed
  • seatbelts
  • alcohol/drugs
  • distraction
  • fatigue.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. If we all play our part we can bring the road toll down.

“There’ll be a marked increase of police on our roads conducting High visibility patrols, Speed Cameras, and RBT sites.

“This year we will also have a focus on targeted mobile RBT patrols in rural areas.  Don’t think it’s safe to drink and drive because you’re in a regional area,” said Mr Hine.

These strategies are all aimed at increasing road safety awareness, and reducing serious injury crashes.

Motorists are also urged to contact 131 444, to report any incidents of dangerous driving.

“Our advice is to take your time getting to your destination, drive to the weather conditions, don’t even consider driving if you’ve had a few drinks, and obey the speed limit,”
