Rail Safety Week

Tasmania Police is supporting Rail Safety Week from August 11-17 and reminding drivers and pedestrians of the dangers of level crossings.

Police will be conducting extra patrols of level crossings during the week, especially on the North West Coast.

Inspector Shane LeFevre said:

“Level crossings should always be approached with caution as a train could come at any time.

“Trains can’t swerve and they can’t stop suddenly so it’s up to drivers and pedestrians to make sure they cross when it’s safe.

“Always obey the signals at level crossings.

“If the warning lights and bells are activated then there is definitely not time to cross.”

On the North West Coast police will be conducting extra patrols of the level crossings with the highest incidences of near misses:

  • Burnie: Edward Street
  • Ulverstone: Riebey Street, Jermyn Street, Water Street, Main Street, Queen Street
  • Spreyton: Tarleton Road, Sheffield Road / Mersey Main Road
  • Devonport: Stoney Rise Road, Formby Road, William Street
