Bomb Response Group (BRG)

During the late 70's, the bombing incident outside the Hilton Hotel in Sydney was the catalyst for the Federal Government forming a body which was dedicated to advising on the protection against such violence.

This body, now called the National Counter Terrorism Committee, (NCTC) was instituted and from this various specialist units were able to be formed in each state, the Bomb Response Group being one of these groups.

The BRG (Bomb Response Group) is a state Police responsibility although NCTC facilitate training and equipment requirements.
In Tasmania the BRG has a base in all three regions, i.e. North Western, Northern and Southern based bomb technicians. Each of these personnel have undertaken nationally accredited training and have attained skills that allow then to deal with a wide range of bomb and explosive incidents.

Up to date equipment is used by the Group which allows members to identify and eliminate threats and hazards. Remote positioning vehicles, (Bomb Disposal Robots) are utilised to reduce the bomb technicians' exposure to potentially life threatening situations.

The BRG also collects and disposes of found and hazardous explosives.

The Group has a high skill level which is maintained through frequent training programs and dedication.
