Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB)

In 1904, the Tasmania Police Department established a special branch of detectives to be responsible for the investigation of crime.

Today there are Criminal Investigation Branches in each of the four geographical police districts; their headquarters are in Hobart, Bellerive, Launceston and Burnie. There are about 150 police officers assigned to detective duties in the CIB under the command of eight Detective Inspectors.

Any police officer may apply for transfer to the CIB, but only those officers who possess the skills and qualities to conduct complex and thorough investigations, and operate as part of a highly coordinated and professional team, are selected.

The primary responsibilities of the CIB are to prevent and investigate criminal activity in Tasmania. The duties of detectives, which are many and varied, include:

  • Taking crime reports;
  • Attending crime scenes;
  • Interviewing witnesses and suspects;
  • Identifying and seizing exhibits;
  • Surveillance and other covert police operations;
  • Drug investigations;
  • Charging offenders; and
  • Presenting evidence in court.

The Criminal Investigation Branch remains one of the most challenging and rewarding branches of the service in which to serve.
