FSST and DNA Profiling
Where DNA samples are taken from a person, or exhibits are taken from a crime scene in relation to any investigation, the items are forwarded to Forensic Science Service Tasmania (FSST) for analysis and matching. FSST perform profiling of the samples and notify Tasmania Police of the outcome. FSST staff also give evidence in court to substantiate their findings.
What is FSST?
Forensic Science Service Tasmania (FSST) provides forensic chemistry and forensic biology services to State and local government agencies, industry and the general public on a fee for service basis.
The Forensic Chemistry Section provides a general forensic chemistry service and expert evidence in toxicology, controlled substances, blood alcohol, accelerant residues and physical evidence (including glass, paint, fibres, metals and plastics). FSST also provides Supervising Analyst Services under the Road Safety (Alcohol & Drugs) Act 1970.
The Forensic Biology Section provides a general forensic biology service in biological examination of evidence items and DNA profiling. They also provide a 24 hour on-call crime scene service.
Recent Historical Background
In October 1994, the Government Analyst Laboratory (consisting of Forensic Chemistry, Water, Food and Pesticide Residues Sections) and Forensic Biology Unit were amalgamated with a subsequent name change to the Government Analytical and Forensic Laboratory (GAFL). The Department of Health and Human Services remained the host Agency.
In September 1998 a Government decision saw a change of Agency for GAFL from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to the newly formed Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment (DPIWE). In the new Agency structure the Analytical Chemistry Section of GAFL was amalgamated with the DPIWE Environment Laboratory and the remainder of GAFL was renamed Forensic Science Service Tasmania (FSST).
The Tasmanian State Service (Restructuring) Order 2000 ordered the amalgamation of Forensic Science Service Tasmania (FSST) with the Department of Police and Emergency Management (DPEM) effective from July 1, 2000.
FSST provides a major support service to Tasmania Police, however the service is also available to other Government departments, private organisations and the public.
The Director of FSST reports to the Secretary, Department of Police and Emergency Management.
