Search & Rescue Unit
The Search & Rescue Unit has the responsibility for emergency responses on land and sea as well as by helicopter throughout the State. The unit also has trained specialist search & rescue personnel for high risk situations as well as the diving squad. This squad recovers property associated with crime from waters around the State as well as the recovery of bodies from inland and coastal waters.
To ensure a high state of preparedness, the unit coordinates regular exercises between Police and volunteer organisations such as:
- State Emergency Service;
- Australian Volunteer Coast Guard;
- Bushwalking Clubs;
- Caving Clubs;
- Canoe Clubs; and
- Other similar groups.
The unit also liaises with Commonwealth agencies and represents Tasmania Police for search and rescue at a national level.
